A cult film that has not taken a ride. Very beautiful images, a sensitivity, tenderness, and however a sense of humor, sometimes scathing. All beautifully supported by the wonderful music of Cat Stevens. A DVD essential!!!! Missed, in my opinion, scenario sewn with white thread, some scene are at the limit of likely, good actors, however, but that's not enough... Was just about audible on a small combi booster.. As for the film itself, in spite of the liberties taken by Michael Mann with the novel of Fenimore Cooper (or thanks to them!), this is probably one of the best, illustrating an episode from the conquest of the new world. It manages to combine a concern for historical accuracy and plausibility of the ethnographic, a critical look at the action "civilizing" of the british crown, the indispensable spice of interracial love between two protagonists transcending the limits of their social condition and the dynamism of an action movie. This beautiful table is, however, slightly clouded by some bias : the marquis of Montcalm, the only role of the movie entrusted to a French actor (Patrice Chéreau), is camped in dandy ridiculous and mannered ; the simultaneous translation into imitation-French petit-nègre by Heyward of the oral argument of Hawkeye in front of the grand Sachem succession of the Grand-Guignol ; finally, a detail apparently overlooked, blow-drying always good to Cora and Alice throughout their if terrible adventure seems somewhat " bigger than life "... These mixed genres give a lot of mischief and liveliness to the story. I liked it. Despite a plot that often extremely predictable, it releases enough tenderness and humor to deserve largely to the detour.
